Recent progress on laser acceleration

Recently, there has been a great interest in ultrahigh "eld particle acceleration driven by ultraintense laser pulses in plasmas. Although particle acceleration by laser "elds has been proposed since the beginning of the laser evolution, there has been tremendous progress in recent years. The laser-driven particle acceleration concepts are reviewed on the physics mechanism. In particular, the electron acceleration by the laser wake"eld in plasmas is illustrated by recent experimental results. Recent progress on the laser wake"eld accelerators (LWFA) with the plasma waveguiding is presented as a capillary-guided LWFA for GeV particle acceleration. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
